The Genetic Rescue Foundation is excited to announce the grand opening of our store! We're a not-for-profit organization and we hope to use our store as another fundraising avenue to help our talented scientists get the funding they need to complete their amazing research.
Initially we're focusing on The Kakapo 125 project. This project aims to sequence the genomes of all 125 known living kākāpō. The kākāpō is a species of large, flightless, nocturnal, ground-dwelling parrot endemic to New Zealand. A combination of traits make it unique among its kind; it is the world's only flightless parrot, the heaviest parrot and it's nocturnal.
Via our store you will have the ability to sponsor the sequencing of a specific individual kākāpō's genome. As a thank you for this sponsorship you will receive a unique piece of DNA art constructed from the genetic information we obtain from sequencing that individual courtesy of our partnership with DNA11.
Sequencing the genome's of all known living kākāpō will allow us to better understand the genetic variation between individuals which in turn allows us to breed pairs even more selectively. It also serves as a foundation for potential future genetic intervention in order to more quickly and successfully breed kākāpō.
